The Bus Stops project

At DAL Group we believe it is the right of all people with disabilities to have the opportunity to engage in productive and meaningful employment.

The Coca Cola Bus Stop Project was established to assist people with disabilities with reintegration, as well as becoming productive and economically independent members of the community.

On a personal level, the project has helped over 200 people with physical, intellectual, and hearing disabilities so far. But also looking at the bigger picture, the impact reaches far beyond and is reflected directly in passenger safety, the transportation system, and overall economic development.

History

With the great dependency on public transport in the state of Khartoum, commuters are confronted with several challenges while waiting for the bus every day, including the scorching heat, rain, and dust.

In response, not only did DAL identify a need for bus stop shelters and proper transit signs, but also entrepreneurial opportunities for people with disabilities. We felt compelled to act and the project was launched on the 17th of April 2014 as the first of its kind in Sudan.

Each bus stop kiosk provides passengers with small and inexpensive consumables such as mini cakes and biscuits, as well as newspapers, magazines, stationery, personal hygiene products, and much more.

Some route numbers and names have also been changed, making it easier to understand the bus routes throughout the city.

Major Accomplishments:

  • To date, 410 stations have been purchased
  • 372 stations have been installed across the Greater Khartoum area
  • 182 stations have been connected to the electricity network
  • 200 kiosks currently used as retail outlets

Objectives

  • To install and manage 1,000 bus stations, kiosks, and 1,200 street signs in Khartoum state
  • To build the beneficiaries’ sales and administration skills, and empower them to profitably operate these kiosks
  • To provide 1,255,866,450 passengers in Khartoum annually with safe, clean, and comfortable transportation facilities (3,440,730 passengers per day across 7 localities)
  • To help 21,303 drivers (daily) increase the number of rounds by decreasing waiting times at designated collection and drop-off points

Benefits

  1. Enhancing passenger safety in a number of ways:
    1. Preventing passengers from trying to board in hazardous locations (such as busy intersections).
    2. Reducing boarding time.
    3. The bus stop shelters are located in areas with good lighting and visibility to enhance safety.
